Your wedding day isn’t all about the photos. But if beautiful wedding photography is important to you, your venue can make a much bigger difference than you might think.
The right venue doesn’t just provide a place for your ceremony and reception. It influences your lighting, your portrait locations, the overall feel of your wedding gallery, and how much flexibility you have throughout the day.
As a Georgia wedding photographer, I’ve photographed weddings in a variety of venues, and I’ve learned that some spaces naturally create more opportunities for beautiful, meaningful photographs than others.
Here are three questions I encourage couples to ask while choosing a wedding venue.

This is not a deal breaker but often times, newer venues have less trees or structures for you to take photos near when you are dealing with direct sunlight. Personally, I am not afraid of direct sunlight for photos but it is good to have space for both shade photos and direct sun, however, it is ideal to have the option to shoot photos in both lightings. This also means on a hot spring or summer wedding day that you are not sweating more than you have to in order to get your wedding portraits.

When you do a walkthrough of your space, take note of the 360 view in your getting ready space, in the ceremony location, in the reception area. Is there enough outdoor space for you to walk around and take photos? Things like stairs, pretty windows, lots of foliage/flowers growing on the property, are all good signs of a beautiful backdrop for your day. You want to live in the moment on your day and not be constantly moving to be in the right backdrop for photos. Enjoy your day knowing that everywhere you go, the photos will be beautiful.

Oftentimes venues will play it safe and go with a lot of white walls at the venue. There is nothing wrong with this if thats the look you want, but consider this. You, the bride, are most likely wearing white on your wedding day. If this is the case, you want to stand out, to have contrast so your dress pops against any backdrop as you live in the moment on your day. Look for color in the landscape as well as the actual venue to determine if you will stand out in that background. Another thing to look for is dimension. This may be texture in foliage, wall texture, the wall art and furniture. Is everything just blank or is there character all around you?
In conclusion, you want to choose a wedding venue that not only meets your needs for the day but also feels like you and your fiancé more than anything. As a wedding photographer, I’ve photographed weddings in many different types of venues, and no two spaces are ever the same.
Whether you’re planning a wedding in Augusta, elsewhere in Georgia, or at a destination you’ve fallen in love with, taking the time to think through these details can make a huge difference in your final gallery. Beautiful wedding photographs aren’t just about the photographer. They’re also about choosing a location that gives you the freedom to be fully present while creating a backdrop that reflects your story.
