A wedding is a big event for a bride and groom and many traditions come with big moments. So how do you choose what traditions to incorporate into your wedding day? You might be thinking “I just don’t understand the point of traditions.” I’m here as an experienced Augusta, Georgia wedding photographer to explain what a few of them mean and why I think they are special for your day.
This is actually a somewhat newer tradition in the grand scheme of time. Some might even be intrigued by the fact that this tradition goes against the older tradition of not seeing the bride before the isle on the wedding day. A first look or first touch is a way for the couple to get the pre ceremony jitters out and to be able to spend more time together on their day that they share. Often couples use this time to read letters or vows to one another. From a photos perspective, this time is often filled with beautiful emotion and joy that you share with your soon to be spouse.

There is something special about the mother-son and father-daughter dances that get me teary eyed behind my camera. Your parents pour so much into your life, caring for you, and sometimes even into your wedding day planning. Sharing a moment of attention for them is just so sweet. As someone who has personally lost my mom, I know that parent moments aren’t for everyone’s situation. Sometimes a parent isn’t able to be there or isn’t present in your life the way you want them to be. A good way to combat this tradition being too hard or skipped is to invite a friend, parent figure, grandparent, or sibling to step into that role for this special dance.
Along the same line, I love mother-daughter getting ready moments. A mother’s pride shows through as she looks at her little girl all grown up into a beautiful bride. Tears are usually shed by the bride, mom, everyone watching, and of course me behind the camera.

Lastly, I love a dedicated place to show the generations of love through family members’ wedding photos. This is even more fun if it is a surprise to your loved ones to display their wedding photos. There is something special about the love stories that have shaped you. You learn from them by watching their mistakes, watching them choose each other first, and watch them grow together. I especially love this cake cutting table display from a wedding I shot in April. How cute to see this tradition throughout the generations.

Regardless of what traditions you choose to keep, they are important in the story of your day. When choosing a photographer, it is so important to choose someone who has mastered the art of noticing the little things, catching the tearful moments, the burst of laughter, and so much more. If you want to have this peace of mind on your day, don’t hesitate to inquire about your date.
